My life at this moment:

Alright, Kenz, I'll humor you.

I: Am researching broadway and jazz fake books when I should be sleeping. Does anyone know if it's better to use one for B flat instruments or C instruments? Transposing is so annoying.

My cats: Are racing around the house at top speed, regardless of the fact that it's 10:30 at night. They sound like elephants. They weigh about 10 pounds combined. Go figure.

The talent show: Is going to be pretty cool, I think (hope!). Chamber's singing Seasons of Love, all on separate mikes, and we're making Steffi play piano. I have one of the solos :). Purty fun! I hope we actually end up sounding good...

Sound of Music: Is going really well...but ack! Running rehearsals in a week! I have to get off book! *scrambles to memorize lines*

Current Music: I finally got the soundtrack to Rent. My favorite songs so far: Seasons of Love, Take Me or Leave Me, La Vie Boheme, Rent, The Tango Maureen. My least favorite: Over the Moon (Idina is amazing, but belting the same note acappella for too long gets a little hard on the ears!), Today 4 You. Wow, I should actually watch the movie sometime.

I can't think of anything else that's remotely interesting to any of you lot. Not that this was interesting. I need to find some other way to entertain myself.

Update, You Fools

Just kidding about the fools part.  :)

The question of Achilles

You are given a choice.

Either a long and ordinary, but happy life, or a short life filled with glory. Which do you choose?

Something the Theatre Geeks Might Be Interested In...

Today I was picking up a violin concerto at Laffayette music and started browsing the sheet music. What did I find? A collection of songbooks from musical theatre. They have about five different editions, with different songbooks for each range (Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone and Bass). Each book has about 25 songs. Just thought the theatre geeks might be interested.

Some of My Goals...

Yes Kelsey, I copied your brilliant idea :)

-Go to a really cool Christian college

-Staff Kansas

-Work at a really quiet sort of coffee house place, like a bar, except minus the alcohol...wait...that didn't make much sense.  Sorry.

-Pass the AP french test

-Land a main role in a show

-Plant a tree that actually lives- it's so hard!  You have to like, outsource branches and everything!

-Make money in the stock market

-Go to France

-Get a book published

-Staff middle school winter retreat

-Bike more

-Go to the midnight showing of a movie with friends- a movie that's NOT harry potter

I think that's about it for now... That's definitely enough to last me for a while!  haha

Death Bed

I am officially deathly ill. Let the mourners come. My head hurts, my throat feels like the fires of Carthage are welling within it. And i'm soooooo dizzy. With a fever. Honestly, I've never been high (and never plan to be), but i think this would be alot what it feels like. Or a hangover. I've even been lapsing into Spanish!

Blueberry By Golly

I just discovered this new really cool way to make tea. Boil the water with blueberries in it! (obviously a kettle won't work for this). Let the berries boil in the water for 5 min or so. It's so cool! The water turns purple, the kitchen starts to smell like blueberries, and the berries get huge and then just split right open (kind of like when you boil cranberries). Then pour the water over your tea; berries and all.

The state of the union

The presidential campaign: seems to have cooled down for a moment or two

The tv: is playing the Incredibles.  meh

French class: wasn't that bad today- we wrote scripts and I'm a viking

My weekend: is planned.  Alot.  Hmmmmm...........

My stomach: wants food.  Specifically the shishkabob and corn we've been detailing in math class for the past week.  Yeeeeah.

The neighbors: are getting babysat by me in an hour.  Let's hope that goes well

My sleep schedule: needs to expand.  I'm tired!  :)

Like, every junior guy I know!: has completely gone insane and...we're not going into that haha

Kelsey: is being evasive about her "relationship" with Thomas.  Sexual agression?  WHAT???  DON'T WORRY JUST KIDDING!

Wednesday, February 20

My life of late:

The weekend: Good thing it was a long one. Spent it working on my math origami project. Manikeneko (yeah, yeah, I know I butchered the spelling) is starting to look more like a cat and less like a pineapple. Only 90-odd triangles left to fold! *makes agonized face*

Monday: Viola lesson. My teacher is annoyed that I'm having issues with my subdominant arpeggios. I am annoyed because I can't remember fingerings for 10 or so scales/arpeggios, all of which are really boring. At least the Bach I'm playing is nicer than my last piece (Vaughn-Williams, that one guy who did the Chamber Greensleeves piece - ick!).

Tuesday: Choir in the morning. We establish that Zane definately has senioritis - he keeps ditching rehearsals. Our jazz music is fun - and our concert's going to be awesome (I hope)! We each have our own mike - soooo much better than what we normally do with choir. Uneventful school day. Rehearsals were fun - lotsa trust excercises involving blindfolds. I think Paige and I must have been traumatized as infants, we both have some serious trust issues. Tom attempts to fight off invisible enemies while blindfolded. Go figure. I get dizzy dancing again - I NEED to learn how to spot if I'm going to keep my balance on stage. Run home to babysit until 11:00, watch Bye Bye Birdie - that is such a ridiculous musical. It's funny, though.

Wednesday: English was fun - we've got so many good writers in our class! Sam does another one of his Wednesday performances - where does he come up with all these crazy songs to sing for us? Rehearsals - blech. I am too tired to focus. I'm glad we're off the hook for the rest of the week.

This is my life. Peace.

Education in America

I found this article the other day, and I really didn’t know what to think. Some of the humor is definitely tongue-in-cheek, but the message is pretty valid, I think. What’re your opinions?

SCHOOL – 1957 vs. 2007

Scenario: Jack goes quail hunting before school, pulls into school parking lot with shotgun in gun rack.
o 1957 – Vice Principal comes over, looks at Jack’s shotgun, goes to his car and gets his shotgun to show Jack.
o 2007 – School goes into lock down, FBI called, Jack hauled off to jail and never sees his truck or gun again. Counselors called in for traumatized students and teachers.

Scenario: Johnny and Mark get into a fistfight after school.
o 1957 – Crowd gathers. Mark wins. Johnny and Mark shake hands and end up buddies.
o 2007 – Police called, SWAT team arrives, arrests Johnny and Mark. Charge them with assault, both expelled even though Johnny started it.

Scenario: Jeffrey won’t be still in class, disrupts other students.
o 1957 – Jeffrey sent to office and given a good paddling by the Principal. Returns to class, sits still and does not disrupt class again.
o 2007 – Jeffrey given huge doses of Ritalin. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADD. School gets extra money from state because Jeffrey has a disability.

Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his neighbor’s car and his Dad gives him a whipping with his belt.
o 1957 – Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman.
o 2007 – Billy’s dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. State psychologist tells Billy’s sister that she remembers being abused herself and their dad goes to prison. Billy’s mom has an affair with psychologist.

Scenario: Mark gets a headache and takes some aspirin to school.
o 1957 – Mark shares aspirin with Principal out on the smoking dock.
o 2007 – Police called, mark expelled from school for drug violations. Car searched for drugs and weapons.

Scenario: Pedro fails high school English.
o 1957 – Pedro goes to summer school, passes English, goes to college.
o 2007 – Pedro’s case is taken up by the state. Newspaper articles appear nationally explaining that teaching English as a requirement for graduation is racist. ACLU files class action lawsuit against state school system and Pedro’s English teacher. English banned from core curriculum. Pedro given diploma anyway but ends up mowing lawns for a living because he cannot speak English.

Scenario: Johnny takes apart leftover firecrackers from 4th of July, puts them in a model airplane paint bottle, blows up a red ant bed.
o 1957 – Ants die.
o 2007 – BATF, Homeland Security, FBI called. Johnny charged with domestic terrorism, FBI investigates parents, siblings removed from home, computers confiscated, Johnny’s Dad goes on a terror watch list and is never allowed to fly again.

Scenario: Johnny falls while running during recess and scrapes his knee. He is found crying by his teacher, Mary. Mary hugs him and comforts him.
o 1957 – In a short time, Johnny feels better and goes on playing.
o 2007 – Mary is accused of being a sexual predator and loses her job. She faces 3 years in State Prison. Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.

Where Does The Music Come From?

Hannah sent me the following quote:

"What do you mean, where does the music come from? Where does the music ever come from? The guy says to the girl 'Something is on my mind,' and the girl says 'Really? What is it?' and somebody in the orchestra hits a note and they sing. That's where the music comes from."

And then I wrote this:

Where Does The Music Come From?
Music comes from all kinds of places,
from flutes and cellos and singers with smiling faces.
It comes from the fear we feel when people die.
It comes from the pain of saying goodbye.
Music comes from the joy when we meet
Music comes from the feeling of when families eat.
Some music comes from tired mothers singing sing lullabies
And some music comes from professional Italians in ties.
There are those who say music comes from the head
And then, there are those who play what cannot be said.
Music comes from the flutter when I look in your eyes.
Music tells naught but true love - and never lies.
Music comes from the way you hold my hand.
Music comes from the day that we met in band.
Music comes from the angels, who live above.
Music comes from those who love.

What do you think?

Distraught. Confused. Exhausted.

Life has been rather taxing lately.  Growing up is difficult.  It's a good thing God gave us parents.  I'm really tired.  It's a good thing God gave us tomorrow off.  I think I'm going to get some of my Ironman requirements done- if the weather's warm enough, I'm taking my journal, Bible, Ironman journal, Intimacy with the Almighty, and crashing the park for like three hours.  I'm looking forward to it.  Mel's sick, so she wasn't at church today.  I wish she was.   And then Kacey was in Winter Park.  It was actually a really small youth group, so we had our talk in the cafe.  Bobby taught us a new form of farkling.  It seems like everyone is having some hard weeks.  Kacey's mom is getting married, by the way.  It seems like a year of life changes.  Really, who hasn't gone through some?  It could be as miniscule as the changing of a school (and I don't just mean P2P ms to P2P hs), or your mom getting married, or just...growing up, as cheesy as that sounds.  I think I'm going to veg tonight.  After I clean my room.  Yeah, it's a good thing we have tomorrow off.
Good
Night
God
Bless

Movie Review (quite brief)

I just saw this movie Eastern Promises about this little family in London who stumbles upon the diary of a young girl. he girl, who was only 14, was held captive by the Russian Mafia and is basically used for sex (and tortured). She got pregnant, and documents this all in her diary, along with her plans to kill herself in order to save the child, and in turn herself, from this nightmare. Anyway, she 's found collapsed and is taken into an ER room where a nurse finds the diary in her bag. She locates an address, and arrives at the location hoping to find out who the girl was so they can contact a family member. The man at the address is, of course, the head of this mafia ring. Anyway, the nurse and her family get sucked into this circle of blackmail and a series of secrets are revealed form the diary's translation, and i'm in a hurry now and can't talk but if you can see it then do but just be warned that it's really violent i'm talking Sweeney Todd here slit throats and all.

Housekeeping/Public Service Announcements

1. The title "A Gathering of Awesome" is bugging me because it doesn't fit with the new template. Any ideas for a new one?

2. I just realized that our URL doesn't include all of the bloggers. Kelsey's missing. Unless anyone has any qualms, in one week I will change the URL to http://kelsey-kenz-mo-olive-unnaturalchild.blogspot.com

3. We should all send Olive annoyed e-mails that tell her to post.

That's it.

New template

Hey guys,
Well, I was looking at templates today, and I liked this one. Hope you do to! If not, anyone can feel free to change it/comment.

Cheers,
Liesl

This is funny...

For all you english and language nerds out there, this reminds me of the book "Eats, shoots, and leaves," only it's about quotation marks instead of commas. No idea if any of you has ever read said book, but it's still quite humorous...

*rises from the land of the invalids*

Well, I've finally left my sickbed. Grrr. I hate being sick. I hate fevers, runny noses, achiness, and most of all, I hate uncontrollable coughing. Am I the only one who hates being sick? That's a dumb question, never mind. Of course no one likes being sick. Apart from the fact that you don't have to worry about homework (that is, until you find out how far behind you've gotten and have to make it all up a week later). Wow, I sound drugged. Stupid Dona Tussin...
