They Draw Nearer

I'm running
But they follow
They're coming
They'll be here tomorrow

They creep up on me
Like essay deadlines
I'm so scared I have to pee
Of tests covered with pines

They are so boring
They are so easy
I'd rather be soaring
Than being cheesy

The CSAPs are here
And I'm really to fear

CAUSE THEY'RE SO FREAKING BORING!

Field Trip

We went on a really lame field trip today. I mean, who wants to sit in a crowded room all day and listen to some old guy ramble about genocide? No one I know. It was really boring and lame.

Sick Day

I was sick today. I had a migrane that made my vision go out periodically. I was nauseated, pale and unable to stand. I was both cold and hot. All this happened in about five minutes. I slept for four hours and I was pretty much better. I blame P.E. class for all this.

Record Time for Essay Writing

I have a new record time for writing a five-paragraph essay: One hour. For anyone who's interested, here's a copy.

A Christian Gandhi?

Many would be surprised to learn that Mahatma Gandhi taught Christian principles as well as Hindu, even though he didn’t belong to any religion other than Hinduism. Gandhi’s methods work so well because they are what many religions are commanded to do, yet it does not address any religion specifically. When one’s enemy is doing what their religion says is right and one is doing what their religion says is wrong, fighting them seems hypocritical and evil. Even though Gandhi was Hindu, he used many Christian principles, such as non-violence, that all people are God’s children and love to fight against the British rule.
“And eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.” This is one of Gandhi’s most famous quotes, yet the phrase “an eye for an eye” is not originally his. It comes from the bible, in Matthew 5:38 (Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.). In verse thirty nine, Jesus goes on to say “But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.” Gandhi interpreted this to mean that to get what you want, you need to let your enemy hurt you. Gandhi was not violent to get what he wanted; he was not violent at all. This proved most effective, since to the British people who had been taught the same principle, hurting those people who were unwilling to fight back but rather turned the other cheek as was the morally right thing seemed monstrous. Hurting obedient children of God is horrible.
Gandhi believed that all people are children of God. Many Christians often believe this too. Some young children sing the song “I Am A Child Of God”. The lyrics to the song are: I am a child of God, and He has sent me here, has given me an earthly home with parents kind and dear. Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, help me find the way. Teach me all that I must do to live with Him someday. Believing that all are children of God makes one see that each individual is worth something and has potential to be a perfect being. This belief makes everyone brothers and sisters and encourages love.
Love was at the very core of Gandhi’s beliefs and teachings. Love for all people and things makes one want to make the world a good place and to be a friendly person. A desire to be virtuous grows proportionally to love. If you love someone, you want to be your best for them and treat them well. Love was what inspired non-violence, it’s a desire to treat everyone not as they are, but as they could be (in a positive way). Love connects all peaceful and good things in the world.
Gandhi used non-violence, the belief that all people are children of God and love to unite India in a peaceful protest to the grand injustices that were placed upon them. He was an example to all people, no matter what their religion and is a teacher around whose teachings someday all could rally around, and, at last, achieve world peace.

The Princess Bride

I recently saw the Princess Bride and I loved it. My favorite quotes:
"Your vote of confidence is overwhelming."
"Is this a kissing book?"
"I've hired you to help me start a war. It's an prestigious line of work, with a long and glorious tradition."
"He's right on top of us. I wonder if he is using the same wind we are using."
"You've been mostly-dead all day."
"Truly, you have a dizzying intellect."
"You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly less well-known is this: never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha..."
"You mean, you'll put down your rock and I'll put down my sword, and we'll try and kill each other like civilized people?"
"Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something."
"Buttercup: We'll never survive. Westley: Nonsense. You're only saying that because no one ever has."
"The King's stinking son fired me, and thank you so much for bringing up such a painful subject. While you're at it, why don't you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it? We're closed."
"My way's not very sportsman-like."
"Miracle Max: Wait. Wait. I make him better, Humperdinck suffers? Inigo Montoya: Humiliations galore! Miracle Max: That is a noble cause."
"Yes you're very smart. Shut up."
"I fight gangs for local charities and stuff."
"Inconcievable!"

A New Kind Of Culture

My English homework tonight was to write about my feelings on my heritage, so here's what I wrote.

A New Kind of Culture
I really don’t care about my heritage. I feel like “okay, that’s great, I’m here, who cares about some dead people I don’t even know?” I think I’m from Scotland and Germany, but I’m not entirely sure. I don’t really feel connected to any specific culture. Why do I have to be either Scottish or German or Japanese or American? Why can’t I just be Moriah? Why do I need a culture? Why can’t I just start a new culture? I’m not like the stereotypical Scottish girl with braids and a kilt and bagpipes, I’m not a yodeling, beer obsessed German, I’m not a grade obsessing, very polite, kill myself to be talented Japanese person and I’m not a idiotic, meat-loving, sports and fashion obsessed, popular-wannabe, ignorant and over-consuming water buffalo American! I’m Moriah, a girl who likes braids, hates all alcohol, over-apologizes and tries to not be ignorant. I like talking with my friends, writing and spazing. Why isn’t that a culture? I think that if I do have a culture, it’s a completely unique one, individual to me. I don’t feel American. I don’t feel English. I don’t feel Scottish. I don’t even feel Mormon. I just feel like me, Moriah. My ancestors aren’t a part of me, they were completely different people. I’m glad they existed, otherwise I wouldn’t but I am not obsessed with them. I am my own person, not my ancestors. If they loved kilts and beer, that’s great, but I don’t have to. My heritage is great in that it exists, but honestly, “who cares?” is my opinion. I care about the future, not the past.
